Today is Saint Andrews day in Scotland (Where I live)
St.Andrew is the patron saint of Scotland and today is when people get the day off work/school to kind of celebrate being Scottish, i suppose.
I thought that I would have a little Scottish themed post today
First up I want to show you one of my favourite up and coming Scottish designers
Her name is Niki Taylor and she has the clothing label Olanic
Here are some images from her past couple of collections
I really like how her clothes have a girly side but also mixed with a masculine edge to them too
I don't know if I'm being biased or not but i think Scotland has a really great music scene just now, there seems to be new bands appearing all over the place
My favourite band of the moment is one of them
Although frightened Rabbit are a lot more established than a lot of other new bands here
they have yet to break through to the mainstream
But with a new album coming out and this new single i don't think it will be long till they do
And St.Andrews day wouldn't be St.Andrews day if there wasn't any Robert Burns involved
Robert Burns is the most famous poet from Scotland his songs/poems are legendary
In case you weren't familiar with Burns poems he writes them in old Scots language which is basically a slang version of English
So I've put a translation next to the poem in proper English so you can get the meaning
This is one of my favourite Burns poems
It's called
A man's a man for a' that
I think it's amazing that even though it was written so many years ago
It is still so relevant to today
Is there for honest poverty That hings his head, an' a' that? The coward slave, we pass him by -- We dare be poor for a' that! For a' that, an' a' that, Our toils obscure, an' a' that, The rank is but the guinea's stamp, The man's the gowd for a' that.
What though on hamely fare we dine, Wear hoddin grey, an' a' that? Gie fools their silks, and knaves their wine -- A man's a man for a' that . For a' that, an' a' that, Their tinsel show, an' a' that, The honest man, tho' e'er sae poor, Is king o' men for a' that.
Ye see yon birkie ca'd 'a lord,' Wha struts, an' stares, an' a' that? Tho' hundreds worship at his word, He's but a cuif for a' that. For a' that, an' a' that, His ribband, star, an' a' that, The man o' independent mind, He looks an' laughs at a' that.
A prince can mak a belted knight, A marquis, duke, an' a' that! But an honest man's aboon his might -- Guid faith, he mauna fa' that! For a' that, an' a' that, Their dignities, an' a' that, The pith o' sense an' pride o' worth Are higher rank than a' that.
Then let us pray that come it may (As come it will for a' that)
That Sense and Worth o'er a' the earth Shall bear the gree an' a' that!
For a' that, an' a' that, It's comin yet for a' that, That man to man the world o'er Shall brithers be for a' that.
A man's a man for a' that-Translation
Is there for honest poverty That hangs his head, and all that?
The coward slave, we pass him by -We dare be poor for all that!
For all that, and all that,Our toils obscure, and all that,The rank is but the guinea's stamp,
The man's the gold for all that.
What though on homely fare we dine,Wear course grey woolen, and all that?
Give fools their silks, and knaves their wine -A man is a man for all that.
For all that, and all that,Their tinsel show, and all that,The honest man, though ever so poor,Is king of men for all that.
You see yonder fellow called 'a lord,'Who struts, and stares, and all that?
Though hundreds worship at his word,He is but a dolt for all that.
For all that, and all that,His ribboned, star, and all that,The man of independent mind,He looks and laughs at all that.
A prince can make a belted knight,A marquis, duke, and all that!
But an honest man is above his might -Good faith, he must not fault that
For all that, and all that,Their dignities, and all that,The pith of sense and pride of worth
Are higher rank than all that.
Then let us pray that come it may(As come it will for a' that)
That Sense and Worth over all the earth
Shall have the first place and all that!
For all that, and all that,It is coming yet for all that,
That man to man the world over
Shall brothers be for all that.
P.s excuse the gigantic space between the words and the video i don't know what has happened there!
Oh and i meant to say that i was being funny in yesterdays post
It was meant to be a joke
I dont think drinking beer and cigerettes make you cool at all
But I know a couple of people refrenced that in comments etc
As some of you might know Jimmy Choo is launching a charity footwear collection called Project PEP
The collection donates 25% of its sales to the Simelela Rape Centre in South Africa.
The money goes towards providing the HIV-preventative treatment PEP (which must be taken within 72 hours of exposure to HIV) and counselling to victims of rape in South Africa, which has the highest count of rape in the world. Jimmy Choo has joined up with Elton Johns AIDS foundation to launch a competition to support the launch of the collection.
It is a photograph competition with the theme of
"You, Your Shoes And 72"
Basically your photograph has to include shoes and a number 72 (to represent how long you have to take the PEP treatment, after being exposed to the virus)
Here are some of the examples from the website.
The overall winners will be announced after the competition close on 7Th December, in just a few weeks’ time.
On offer is a Grand Prize of the ultimate Jimmy Choo VIP experience –
The winner will be invited to spend a day of luxury at the Jimmy Choo HQ and choose 7 pairs of shoes and 2 handbags to keep.
Plus over 100 exclusive Jimmy Choo prizes will also be awarded.
I can't get over what an amazing prize this is 7 pairs of Jimmy Choos
I would be happy if i could even get one pair, haha!
I just really wanted to let you all know about this awesome competition
so you could enter
and also to give more awareness to the great project and work that Jimmy Choo is doing to help
1. I have this need to have a hat with a pom pom on it this winter, i have no idea why, This one is perfect.
2. It's weird because when these first came out I thought they were so pretty but I could never walk in them but now seeing them again I think they actually don't look scary high anymore, I still really love them.
3. Does everyone not need a fake gold kinda 'Lizzie Duke' style necklace?
I think we all know the answer is yes.
4. I have been obsessing over this dress for a while now, it is just what I've been looking for, with a slip under it and some fierce shoes on i would be totally rockin' around my Christmas tree.
5. The new Emma Cook sweater, right amount cute, and right amount quirky to make it work, perfect for layering too!
